Occupational Health and Safety
The Department of Education, Training and the Arts is committed to the protection of all employees, students and visitors from risk of injury or illness in the training environment. Each employee / student shall be committed to the elimination of workplace risks, and is responsible for ensuring their work practices are safe.
Sexual Harassment is unwanted and unwelcome sexual attention. What constitutes sexual harassment to one person may not necessarily constitute sexual harassment to another. Types of sexual harassment may include, but are not limited to;
- Touching or brushing up against you
- Sexual innuendo
- Display of offensive print material
- Leering or staring at you
There are several options you have to resolve a sexual harassment situation:
A) See your local Harassment Referral Officer. The Student Services Noticeboard lists the name of your nearest HRO who can:
- Advise you on all the options open to you to resolve your complaint
- Support you in approaching the alleged harasser
- Accompany you to any meetings or enquiries
B) See a TAFE Counsellor for emotional support and advice on how to deal with the situation.
C) You may approach any staff member for support
If you are under 18 years, any complaints of sexual harassment will be referred to the Director so that your best interests are protected.
Bullying, intimidation, discrimination and abuse of power, are other examples of harassment or workplace violence. These will not be tolerated at Sunshine Coast TAFE. Students who have such concerns should discuss them with Student Counsellors so that appropriate action can be taken.
Sunshine Coast TAFE has Public Liability Cover for Public Liability and Property Damage as well as insurance for students undertaking Work Experience/Vocational Placement. Coverage is for Public Liability and WorkCover under special conditions. It is imperative that if you are undertaking Work Experience / Vocational Placement that all paperwork is completed prior to commencement. Apprentices are covered by Workers Compensation while they are in the Sunshine Coast TAFE or while they are on a Sunshine Coast TAFE initiated industrial visit. Other students are not covered for personal accidents. They should consider personal accident insurance. Volunteers must complete an induction process and be registered within the institute.
If you have been injured, or are involved in an incident ( e.g. near misses) report the accident / incident to Sunshine Coast TAFE staff who will help you complete a "Work Injury / Incident Report". You will be asked to provide details so that Sunshine Coast TAFE can assist you, and reduce the likelihood of the event re-occurring. If an accident happens while involved in Sunshine Coast TAFE activities, please ask for first aid assistance immediately. First aid officers are available at each centre. If a student (or anyone else) requires urgent medical treatment, for whatever reason while on institute property, an ambulance will be called immediately. There will be no cost for ambulance transportation.

Evacuation Procedures are in place for all campuses throughout Sunshine Coast TAFE. Please make yourself conversant with these procedures. In the event of an emergency situation please follow the instructions of your teacher / tutor.
- When an alarm sounds, all persons will evacuate the area in which they are located, and proceed to the designated assembly point.
- If an emergency situation arises, an Operational Officer should be notified of the type and location of the danger.
- Operational Officer will then notify relevant emergency services and campus emergency personnel.
- If a staff member is aware of a false alarm, or that an emergency does not exist, this must be reported personally to an Officer in Charge or the Director. Under no circumstances should any person re-enter a building.
- Campus emergency personnel will be available should assistance be required. Teachers not in charge of classes at the time shall be available to assist in first aid, communication and control of evacuees.
- Evacuation must proceed until the all clear is given.
- Staff and students who are evacuating should take their wallet or handbag and leave immediately.
Under no circumstances re- enter any building until the all clear has been given by the Chief Fire Warden or a member of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Authority.
