Google Email and Collaboration Tools
Sunshine Coast TAFE, in collaboration with Google, has has partnered to provide Google Apps to students.
Sunshine Coast TAFE will provide students with a free Gmail account (and access to other Google Apps), created automatically after they enrol, so that students and teachers have another avenue for communication during the course of their study. It will also allow the Institute to communicate with specific students about important notices and other events of interest.

Student Email (SCIT Gmail)
Students will have over 7 gigabytes of email storage capacity and Calendar functions that allow them to add classes, tutorials and meetings right from the student email interface. Plus:
- Built-in IM, voice and video chat
- Mobile access (for compatible) mobile phones
- Built-in Spam and virus protection
- Institute communications advising you of important events, class changes etc

Google Calendar
Google Calendar is a free Internet based calendar that lets you keep track of Institute and your own events and it also allows you to share your calendars with others. It's the ideal tool for managing personal and program schedules. It is both simple to use and very powerful. Plus:
- Allows you to set up and manage multiple calendars
- Mobile access (for compatible) mobile phones

Contacts
Manage your class mates contacts here, which can be used for collaborative project work on-campus and off-campus. Links in with Gmail and all other Google Apps, so you can find people fast.

Google Docs
It's an online word processor. You can collaborate on the same document live with other class mates, export and import files from other applications, send docs to your favorite blog, and even save docs offline. Plus:

- Mobile access (for compatible) mobile phones

It is anticipated that the rollout of Google Apps at the Sunshine Coast TAFE will greatly benefit students in their studies by increasing their ability to collaborate and co-ordinate with fellow students.
Logging in to Gmail and the other Google Apps for the first time
Login details for first time access will be:
Username: 'SCIT student number'@sunshinecoasttafe.edu.au (eg. 012345678@sunshinecoasttafe.edu.au)
Initial password: your date of birth in ddmmyyyy format(eg. 23051986)
You will be required to change this password when you log in the first time.
For Students
It is essential that you regularly read your email as important information will be sent to you from both academic and administrative staff.
For Staff
Staff normally access their email on campus using a desktop client (Microsoft Outlook). If staff are off campus, however,
Webmail is available to easily access their email using a normal Web Browser. To email a student, enter their studentnumber@sunshinecoaasttafe.edu.au. Student numbers can be found on class rolls. To create a distribution list in Outlook to bulk email you class, read this help guide,

Email Etiquette and Electronic Resources Student Rules

Account Creations and spreading the word to students
Sunshine Coast TAFE has developed an automated process for the creation of Google Apps accounts for up to 30,000 students (and that is just the beginning). Based on their student number, accounts will be updated daily for newly enrolled students as they join the TAFE (roughly a 24 hour turn around for account creations post-enrolment).
