I had a very clear idea about what I wanted from a training provider. They needed to be able to cope with the broad diversity of courses I needed to offer our team, from Coxswain to Chef and beyond. They needed to be flexible and adaptable. They needed to listen to me and demonstrate understanding. They needed to be responsive and creative. They needed to help me resolve issues not give me problems. I searched and interviewed far and wide before I chose SCIT. Ever since - I'm very glad I did. SCIT's customised, integrated approach using ours, their own, or other contracted specialised trainers according to our needs, works exceptionally well and is helping us to achieve incremental purposeful improvements throughout the whole of our organisation.
The Endeavour Foundation is Australia's largest not-for-profit disability services organisation, responsible for delivering services to over 3,000 clients a day with intellectual disabilities, and the employment of a further 1,800 supported employees with a disability.
As part of the organisation's commitment to the development of our people and the building of organisational capacity, Endeavour has entered into a corporate partnership with the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT).
One of the critical programs in the development agenda is the conduct of Project Management.
In our experience it's rare that a training organisation takes the time to really listen to what the customer wants and needs. It's rarer that they speak the language of business and can, from concept to completion, manage all aspects of our organisation State wide training programs, including Project Management. A critical success factor is the seamless and professional use of the materials developed and customised to our internal processes and procedures.
SCIT is genuinely interested in partnering our organisation's success and I see their input as strategically important and integral to our continued organisational capability development, growth and productivity strategies.
I have personally been involved in several joint training initiatives with Sunshine Coast TAFE including a Certificate III in Nutrition & Dietetic Support for over 75 of our food services and nutrition assistant staff run initially as a pilot in 2007 across three Qld Health sites and then in 2008-09, a Certificate IV Allied Health Assistant, Nutrition & Dietetic Support training for over 100 staff in 2009 and currently in 2010 and online training in food safety for over 350 of our foodservice staff in 2009.
The roles of TAFE and Qld Health varied in each of these partnerships, depending on the needs and requirements of Qld Health and the training package requirements. In the initial pilot of the Cert III, Qld Health dieticians (with Cert IV TAA) taught and assessed all but one unit, with TAFE completing verification and issuing the qualification. In the follow up Cert III and the Cert IV, TAFE taught and assessed all the non-nutrition units and Qld Health Dieticians taught and assessed the nutrition units with TAFE completing the verification and issuing the qualification. For the online food safety supervisor units, TAFE modified their existing online training modules to contextualise them for Qld Health and taught and assessed the units. Qld Health organised the enrolment information and liaised with the students' supervisors to provide organisational support and verify the students' independent completion of units.
Students have been consistently happy with the training provided in all of the different models, even those doing online training who had little prior experience on computers. For some of the indigenous workers, TAFE provided a workbook based program of the food safety units which were delivered jointly with a Qld Health worker. This proved very successful. It was identified that additional support for base grade foodservice workers is required for online training and Qld Health is working with TAFE to provide this for future online training.
I am currently working with Sunshine Coast TAFE to develop online nutrition units for our food services staff and trainee nutrition assistants completing a Cert III in Nutrition & Dietetic Support and management training for our food services managers. I have found Sunshine Coast TAFE to be innovative and adaptable in their desire to meet the needs of our organisation and our staff training needs.
In all of the programs we have achieved a number of outcomes important to Qld Health as an organisation, including providing consistent training across the state using flexible delivery options, being able to contextualise the training for our organisation to increase its relevance and applicability and achieving cost effectiveness through utilising flexible delivery (limiting time away from the workplace and travel costs) and partnership models. The projects also align with this organisation's Strategic Directions, specifically Developing our people in a way that recognises and supports their role in the delivery of health services (QH Strategic Directions 2007-2011) by ensuring all food service staff have appropriate knowledge and skills to provide quality care to patients/residents/clients via food services through access to regular and relevant training and all food service managers and coordinators having appropriate knowledge and skills to manage safe, effective and efficient food services (QH Statewide Foodservices Policy 2008). Sunshine Coast TAFE's strategic approach to professional development has enabled Queensland Health to address both our staff training needs and business objectives.
